Nice was a morning rather than a destination — we had a few hours before the drive to Monaco, a hire car to collect, and the good sense to know that was enough time for a walk and not much more. The Promenade des Anglais runs along a shoreline that mixes sand and stones depending on where you are, with private sections offering the better beach at a price. The heat was significant. I was wearing the wrong trousers.
Breakfast in a square café was unremarkable — a continental spread that looked reasonable on the menu and tasted like every hotel breakfast we'd paid less for on the trip. A lesson relearned.

Colline du Château
The hill above the old town, reached by lift or on foot, with a park at the top and views across the Mediterranean and the terracotta rooftops of the city that justify the climb by themselves. There is an artificial waterfall built into the hillside that is more charming than it has any right to be. We didn't stay as long as we could have — Monaco was waiting — but it was the best hour of the morning. Worth descending on foot rather than taking the lift back down; the spiral path brings you past a war memorial carved directly into the rock face at the base of the hill, which is easy to miss if you come down the quick way.
Then it was back to the hire car and on to Monaco.
