Kochkor

A town between Tamga and Song Köl — a road stop at Globus Mall and Desert café, rain on the way out, and the region known for traditional Golden Eagle hunting.

Kochkor is a stop rather than a destination, a small town on the road between Tamga and Song Köl where the group pulls over to stretch, use the facilities, and restock before the drive up into the mountains. It has the unhurried feel of a place that knows its role in the regional geography and isn't trying to be anything else. The heavy rain that followed us out of town felt appropriate.

Restaurants & Bars

Desert, Globus Mall

A small mall on the edge of town with a Globus supermarket and a café called Desert, which served as a coffee and comfort stop. The guide's advice on the supermarket cakes was unambiguous: don't trust them. Some things are the same the world over, including teenagers congregating in malls on rainy afternoons, which was exactly what was happening here.

Sports & Activities

Golden Eagle hunting

The area around Kochkor is one of the places people travel specifically to see traditional Golden Eagle hunting, the Kyrgyz practice of training eagles to hunt, which is distinct from falconry and considerably more dramatic in scale. It wasn't on the itinerary for this stop, but worth knowing about if you're spending more time in the region or planning a return visit.
